LILY OF THE VALLEY & KING CHARLES 9th OF FRANCE - 1st May, 1561

There's the clue.. now YOU know why SHE is off to the garden today! For it is the First of May.. Lily of the Valley Day.

Apparently King Charles 9th of France was given a gift of these beautiful flowers on 1st May, 1561 and he thought it was such a lovely idea that he made a tradition of it, giving bunches of these flowers to the ladies of his court.

But the modern tradition in France really dates from 1900. May Day in France is Workers Day, a National Holiday.

Hugo gave them to Constance and SHE received a bunch every year for many years from Bill.

WE grow them ourselves.. here at home and at the garden, they take a little time to be really happy and spread but this year, there are lots and lots of these tightly furled leaves, showing that the roots have spread a long way from their original planting spot!

SHE will pick a big bunch of these lovely flowers, their perfume will be truly delicious in our home.

And with a sunny day forecasted.. I can truly say "Hooray, hooray.. it is the First of May".

GeeGee Parrot.
