SPRING RAIN.. EVERBODY'S DRINKING IT!

Well, they are here in deepest Knightsbridge!

And WE hope they are at the garden as well, for there is nothing more beneficial to plants of all ages and types than gentle rain with warm air..

All of the fruit, except two Yellow Gage trees who are behaving in a very delinquent fashion, are covered in blossom, as are all the Currants and Gooseberries.

HER Grandmother was known as 'The Severe Pruning Company', but she was right. For what do YOU want? An enormously tall leafy tree with no fruit OR a shorter tree covered in fruit and leaves!

SHE bought a 'Montmorency' Cherry tree three years ago from Keepers Nursery, if YOU don't know them, they are an excellent supplier of soft Fruit.

www.keepers-nursery.co.uk finds them..

Now YOU know they are good, SHE very seldom gives names of suppliers, their service is first rate.

Back to that Cherry.. which did not do very much
at all for the first couple of years but grow! So snip.. snip happened last year in June. YOU do the pruning of 'stone' (apricot, cherry, plum etc) fruit trees at a different time to 'seed' fruit (apple, pear) trees.

This year.. Miss Montmorency is covered in pretty blossom! She grows in a raised bed, at her feet grow vegetables.

As the weather forecast is for higher winds and
more rain, SHE pushed four thick bamboos into the earth around the little tree, slipped plumbers pipes over the sticks, wrapped strong horticultural mesh around and over the top and secured this by placing old drink cans over the pipes.

SHE takes the drink cans from a local coffee shop. They could not think why SHE wanted them until SHE showed them a photo. The pull back ring makes the hole tighter when YOU push it back, therefore, they NEVER fly off the bamboo sticks.

All gardeners use bamboo sticks for supporting plants and nets and YOU must always put something over the top of them to prevent poking YOURSELF in the eye, drink cans are perfect!

Now I have to poke HER for breakfast, look at the time! More later.. SHE has housework to do and a card to get into the post.. pip pip.
