FAMILY.. THE WORD THAT STUCK IN HIS MIND.

Happy New Year to you all. I hope that whatever and however the way you chose to spend the last day and night of 2015 was a happy and safe one? For there are some very tragic and ridiculous photos and reports in today's papers.

We spent the evening quietly at home. She went out to change library books and was delighted to find one of the younger librarians on duty, a bright and highly amusing woman who adores her job and is an ace at recommending new writers.

Coming out with a bag of new books, something made her wonder if Lidl might, by some miraculous chance, have their Rye and Sunflower bread in stock? For this bread is something that she knows I love to eat and you all know how she mindful she is of my yumyum!

So, instead of hopping onto a bus going west, she hopped onto a bus going south and went across the river to Clapham Junction.

Whoa! Lidl was packed with masses of customers BUT, clever retailers that they are, the store had masses of people who were replenishing the stock as fast as the customers took things off the shelves.

She went to the bread section, 'yippee GeeGee', she thought, for there was MY bread! She picked up two packets of this, a big bag of delicious looking oranges and three Amalfi Lemons! WOW! What a treat to find these.. BUB and she had only been talking about them on Monday.

A small gift for a fellow volunteer plopped into her basket and she was done, all the tills were being manned so it wasn't long before she was finished and saying "Have a happy New Year" to her check-out person who grinned and said "same to you and let's hope it IS a happy new year", she left the store and walked to the bus stop.

Just in time to hop onto a bus to bring her all the way home.. in the, now, pitch dark! Goodness me, it get's dark so quickly she thought and looked up at the sky.. oh dear, oh dear.. for there were very dark clouds up there, with not a star in sight.

Off at Sloane Square, chilly-billy, the temperature had dropped and the wind had risen.. considerably.

Home-again, home-again, jiggedy-jig. "Tea and some of your special bread sweetie" she said as she came through the front door with WW. "I've got two bags of your special yumyum", zoomzoom, I flew to YumYum HQ's door and she had.. oh, I do love this stuff.

Then it was decision time? She could pull something out of the freezer but that would take a long time to defrost, or she could 'do a raid' on that supermarket on the Cromwell Road., what to do? Well, let me think what I would like to eat? I'd like fish with samphire, she thought, so off she went.

As she opened the front door, she saw heavy rain was pouring down, no sweat, I'll be ok and taking WW and an umbrella, she walked to the 74 bus stop. The buses were full with people with bags and suitcases and it wasn't until the third bus that she was able to get on, yes, the first two that had come along had been full to the brim!

The rain was heavy and it was cold, but with rain-proof clothing and boots, it wasn't 'that' bad. She thought about the people in the north-west and Yorkshire who have had the most dreadful, dreadful time since mid December and considered herself to be incredibly fortunate.

The store was 'quite' busy, joke! It was packed! She cruised into the coffee area and had a cup of delicious coffee, the assistant smiled and said "Ready for 2016?".. she smiled back and said "I most certainly am and I hope you had a happy Christmas break?" The young girl nodded and smiled.

She collected a couple of household items we needed and walked up to the Fish counter and whom should she see but the same man who had bagged up the goodies that Shirley and she had bought on Christmas Eve.

"Greetings" she said and smiled at him, "did you have a happy Christmas and a peaceful break?" he looked at her, smiled and said "yes, we did thank you, you were with that pretty lady with blonde hair who took the fillets, didn't you.", she replied "yes, that's right, they're in my freezer, what have you got for me tonight?"

He looked at his watch and said "well, what would you like Miss?", she looked at the ice slabs and saw lots of samphire (yum), fillets of smoked mackerel fillets, tuna, salmon (got that), trout (got that) and four crabs plus a lot of other stuff. She said what she would like to have and his response was..

"I'll be starting to do my marking down at about 6.45pm, so you can either take what you want now at full price or you can gamble and come back later", she looked at her watch and thought about the second drawer in the freezer, the contents of which she had eaten down in the last month. "Then I'll gamble" she said "I'll see you later" and wandered off to sit and read the British Library diary of events for the next few months which had arrived in the post.

There were other people waiting when she went back at 6.50.. a lot of people! He was bagging fish and pricing it and people were walking away with happy grins on their faces. There was a group of strangely dressed women, one of them, who had an extremely grumpy look on her face, took a look at her and said "what do you want?" she smiled, shrugged her shoulders and smiled as if she didn't understand.

The fishmonger, who heard this, looked at her and smiled.. she smiled back and he continued on doing his bagging and marking and putting the fish in bags onto a big trolley. The strangely dressed women pounced on almost everything, she stood to one side and thought to herself, if I don't get it, I don't get it, I have got ham and eggs and cheese in the fridge but I'll have to rethink tomorrow's first course.

A man, who was also waiting, said to the group of grumpy women "Oh boy, are you greedy or what? How about letting other people have a look in on what's going on offer, what about her - pointing at my mama - she's been waiting too and you lot have just grabbed everything".

The group of greedy women turned their attention to the man, the fishmonger bagged up what was left of what she'd said she would like, priced it and said to her "Happy New Year love and give that pretty blonde friend of yours my best wishes as well, do you know why I remember you both? It's because you wished me AND my family a happy holiday" and coming round the counter, he put the bags into her basket.

She stuck her hand out and shook his hand - that surprised him - and said "I certainly will and thank you for your kindness and again, I wish you AND your family a very happy and healthy new year" and she walked off to the check-out line leaving the angry noisy group of women squawking behind her.

WHAT.. don't worry, I can hear you! What did she get? Well.. Samphire, a large piece of wild salmon, two smoked mackerel fillets, two fat chunks of tuna and a couple of very large dressed crab. Perfect.. as she said she'd bring the first course for today's late lunch that we are having with an old friend who lives up the street.

Yes, I've been invited as well. Crab, samphire and other delicious things for lunch, how slurpicious. I won't be allowed to eat the pudding, she bought a frozen chocolate cake that has all manner of very scrummy chocolate things in it, cream, sponge, chips, ganache (I think that's the right word), it's veryvery chocolatey indeed.

Now we've got to go and get dressed into our lunch party clothes.. stay happy and healthy folks.. be kind.

GeeGee Parrot.
January 1st, 2016.
