Did you think I was talking about her? Nah, she isn't anywhere near a bag of bones yet, the two bags of bones were from our lubbly-jubbly butcher, he was boning out joints of pork as she was walking by his shop and the thought of pork bones boiled slowly with root vegetables, ginger, celery, herbs and some spices to make a pot of porky soup suddenly made a lot of sense on a wintery day.
So they went whoosh into WW along with the three library books she had picked up earlier, along with a large pot of fat free Total yoghurt, a packet of Buckwheat she has promised to a friend and a new tube of Harissa.. heehee, she won't have a cold this winter and a few vegetables.
Spicy stuff Harissa, she squirts a little onto a lot of things, particularly vegetables like Spring Greens and it adds just enough heat without being too hot.
Our Lebanese friend and she are off on a foody-jaunt on Saturday, they both have WWs and will be bound for the Uxbridge Road up in Shepherds Bush. First stop.. 'Nutcase'. As the name suggests, this shop sells nuts, ALL manner of nuts, all done in several different ways and Turkish coffee.
Regular readers of my blog will remember that it was in this shop that a young woman tried to tempt her with some nougat, she squealed and cried "get away from me you naughty girl", much to the amazement of the men who run the shop! But it's now a BIG joke and she always finds just one little piece of nougat wrapped up and placed amongst the nuts when she get home.. very sweet.
Then they'll cross the road and go into 'Damas Gate'. This is a fabulous emporium run by a Syrian family who sell food from all over the Middle East and North Africa. Freekeh, Buckwheat, Bulgar, Barberries, etc.. all the spices and herbs you would, and could, ever want, fresh Tahini sauce, glorious unwaxed Lemons, fresh hot Falafel.. oh slurp.. Dates, Honey.
Lebanese food and Syrian food are very similar and they sell the Lebanese pastries and sweets as well. Olive Oils, Rosewater, you name it, they sell it.
They'll 'waddle' home, for I know these two, they'll undoubtedly find some 'foreign muck' to eat whilst they are out and about, they always do.
But that's a long way-a-way, tomorrow she's bound for Borough Market, she needs Goaty milk and will collect it from Joe plus a pot of curd to give a friend as a treat. Getting to Borough is SO quick, as long as she goes by the Jubilee Line underground, that going there just for some milk is about the same as going to Hammersmith and she thinks nothing of doing that!
On Friday she's meeting Ann in Streatham's wonderful and very active Library, the Henry Tate Library, Tate of the Tate & Lyle Sugar company and Tate Art Gallery fame. She wants to introduce Ann to Bartek and The Elephant House Bakery which is in the mews just off Streatham High Street. Ann is an amazing cook and it is she who the goaty curd is for.
She'll pillage Bartek's deli counter for Ishpol, without which her life is not complete nor her stomach happy, they'll have lunch in a minute Polish Restaurant which is just a few doors away from Bartek and which serves brilliant 'home' cooked food.. and talk a lot.
Well! What a happy week AND the ironing was done! She has a lovely couple of days planned for us next month in February, but we'll tell you about this jaunt nearer the time. It's past ten of the evening clock, she's going to slip some of that medicine down my throat before I got to my cage, I'd better just give in and take it gracefully, for mothers always get their way, don't they?
GeeGee Parrot.
