HAMPTON COURT PALACE & THE LELY PORTRAITS..

Off SHE went to Hampton Court Palace, which SHE lurves with a grand passion... found the magic card which allows HER and a friend free entrance for a whole year to FIVE Royal Palaces.. did YOU realise that The Tower of London is actually classified as a palace?

From Clapham Junction it is a 30 minute train ride - still within Zone 6 - to Hampton Court Station and a very short walk from station to Palace grounds.

SHE was going specifically to see the portraits, mostly by Sir Peter Lely with a couple of Rubens, thrown in for good measure, of the Ladies of the Court of Charles 2nd.. he was the son of Charles 1st who was beheaded.. And he was a very 'NORTY' boy & man! He had already fathered four illegitimate childred before he came to England in 1660 to claim his throne!

And he continued to do so the rest of his life.. most of his children were 'sorted' out with money, titles etc and stayed pretty quiet with the exception of one son, The Duke of Monmouth, who started an awful lot of problems and was executed by his own uncle!!

Anyway.. the portraits were absolutely  amazing.. and they were displayed extremely well, in front of the portrait on both sides was the full discription of who the sitter was and further details.. no waiting for other people to move out of the way in order to peer at some small notice on a wall.

The entrance was up one of HER most favourite bits of the Palace. The Painted Staircase.. this was in a section of the building which were added by Mary of Orange, the niece of Charles 2nd.

'Charley'.. despite being extremely virile.. was married to a woman
whose children did not stay in her womb.. poor, poor Catherine of Braganza.. they had no children that survived, so James succeeded his brother, he was deposed and fled to France and his daughter,
Mary, married to William of Orange but a Stuart by birth, took thethrone.. they had no children.

The throne slid sideways to her sister Queen Anne.. there is your history lesson for the day.. how did it get to the Georges and those Hanoverians, I hear YOU asking?  WELL.. read all about it here..

George 1st's grandmother, sister of Charles 1st, a Stuart by birth, was married to a Hanoverian.. OUR present Queen traces her blood line directly through Victoria to the early Georges, then down the ladder to the norty Stuarts!

The magic card gives YOU entrance to a place called The Members Room, this is a quiet place to sit and eat sandwiches and take a cup of something hot, then a quick walk to the station and a train was
waiting which took HER back to Clapham Junction..

SHE had already been to Lidl to stock up on MY facourite bread so SHE decided to take 295 bus to Hammersmith and slip in a fewhours work at garden.. but, when it came to Fulham Broadway.. sky was very dark towards the south west and it was windy too.. and as minds and plans can both be changed.. SHE did.

SHE came home to have an extremely late lunch and to find ME fast asleep on top of the old office cupboard! I had not heard HER come in. That gave ME a bit of a start to wake up and see  HER
right infront of ole Beaky!

Ooooh, quick flap into YumYum HQ to find fresh new favourite supply of bread and a chick-the-lick leg bone with meat.. what more could a red bummed person want?

SHE has promised lovely Leigh Tale of David Sell, Aunt Hay's brother, Uncle Leslie and The Burmese Monkey but that will come a bit later this afternoon.. WE are off for a little doze..

Yawn..

GeeGee Parrot.

  1. You make me want to visit the Tower of London "next time." Love history, as you might guess. Oh, those Stuarts. I understand why Elizabeth finally had had enough & just said, "Off with her head!" Poor lil' Mary Queen of Scots, that is.
