Poooo.. it's a grey drizzly day here. But hey, at least it's outside.

For the residents of flooded or prone to flooding areas, 'wet weather' has a totally different meaning than it does to people who don't. The flooding in Southern India and our North-West in these last few weeks has been beyond gruesome.

But what is upsetting is, that apart from the completely unprecented amounts of rainfall, the like of which has never ever been seen in way beyond living memory, why do, or rather why are, people allowed to build on flood plains?

Where her allotments are situated is a huge acreage of land called Dukes Meadows. This large area was given to the public by a forebear of the Duke of Devonshire for agricultural and recreational usage. The Civil Service Sports Grounds are there, there are numerous football and rugby pitches, three or four allotment sites, a golf course, a, very fancy, fitness club and two boat houses.

They've sneaked in housing along the road and on one side of the railway track which goes over Barnes Bridge, why, I am not sure for the area is opposite Barnes where the A316 goes over Chiswick Bridge, the whole area is low lying and a flood plain.

There is a housing shortage in the UK, this is true. But, WHY on earth are the government or local authorities, who should know better, allowing or advocating the future building of homes anywhere on or near flood plains or on low lying land near to rivers and or low lying coastal areas?

For there are significant dangers connected with this idiocy, loss of life being the first and financial loss the second. The inhabitants of Carlisle, Cockermouth and Hawick, along with many other equally badly damaged towns and villages in the UK, now have the gruesome task of clearing up their homes and businesses and will have the devil's own job getting insurance against flood damage in the future.

Our government is clearly not willing, otherwise they'ed be sitting in Holland learning how to do it, to spend the millions or billions of pounds sterling needed to manage our waterways like the Dutch whose water wizardy is beyond amazing.

Hugo and Constance both had a very healthy respect for (both fresh and sea) water and turned down the purchase of any house that was near to it, or was situated had at a low altitude with water in the vicinity. A flood will leave more than one mark in your home and memory, that's for sure.

GeeGee parrot.
