HUNTING EASTER EGGS..

She's been on the hunt practically all day long, except for a quick sortee to the local bakery and it's still happening.. what's happening, I can hear you think.. well, her Easter Egg hunt.

She knows they're here, for they MUST be somewhere but where and so it is a case of "oh, where did I put them GeeGee?" By now you must have gathered they're old Easter Eggs, some of them are very old, in fact, they are (pretty) ancient and they're not made of chocolate!

A couple were done by Hugo, several by Constance, one by Frankie Brandt ~ who introduced her to Lidl over twenty years ago ~ and there are a pair of glass ones from Murano which were given to her in 2005 and 2006 by Marie Ghisi, who had that enchanting shop called the Venetian Gallery in Walton Street, which, sadly, is no longer there.

Do you have a little (or big) collection of 'things' that you bring out for special occasions? Everyone thinks of collecting a few treasured Christmas decorations but do you know or did you ever learnt how to blow an egg and decorate it for Easter?

It is such a fun and wonderful thing to do, you can paint them, cover them with bits of paper, which is called decoupage, dye them, wax them and create a batik effect, make them look as if they are made of marble and then varnish or laquer them so they remain glorious forever!

I might have told you about a funny Easter Egg hunt she had many years ago in the '80's, she was on the island of Antigua staying at the charming small hotel called Blue Waters, there were lots of children of all ages staying and she decided to do an Easter Egg hunt for everyone, including the grown-ups as well but first she needed to find the eggs and they had to be white eggs!

It was, as she recalls, damn nearly impossible to find them, for every shop or roadside stall had BIG brown eggs! But find them she did and had the greatest fun decorating these eggs for everyone.

She sent Bill one every year, she initialed and dated them, and when she visited his sister in New York City after his death, she was incredibly touched to see them sitting in a glorious big crystal bowl on a table.

She picked up a marbled one and his sister said "Aren't they sweet, I always loved seeing them at Easter time when mama, my boys and I would go to Washington. Bill knew I loved them and gave them to me the Easter before he died".

She turned with very wet eyes and his sister said "Oh sweetie, I know, we all miss him desperately".. and she said "No, no, I'm not sad-crying, it's because I am so pleased to see you have them, you see, they're mine, I made them, I made him one every year. That's my signature".. then they both got veryvery wet-eyed indeed..

Little things mean a lot, don't they? A "thanks", a couple of kind words of encouragement, a hug, a squeeze, a text, a quick telephone call.. and maybe, a little hand made Easter Egg..

GeeGee Parrot.
