Twas a cold and wet night last night but there was no thought of not going to Aldgate East, even when she discovered she had left her travel pass behind. Nope, back home she went in a hurry and found, not only her travel pass but her GLASSES!
ScurryScurry.. Back again to Sloane Square for she needed the District Line on the Underground. Squeeezing her way on, for it was packed with people going home, whoosh, under the City they went, Tower Hill is the stop before Aldgate East so she got up and moved to the exit.
The Whitechapel Art Gallery is next door to the station, she turned left and crossed the White Chapel Road, walked two long blocks and found the Foundry.
A well preserved Georgian double fronted house. People arriving, oh good, she was on time and in fact, the tour did not start until just after 6.00pm.
The tour was taken by Mr. Alan Hughes. His great grandfather bought the Foundry in 1904, he himself started working there in July 1966. You want to know anything about any type of bell.. he's your man!
The company's start date is 1570, making this the oldest manufacturing company STILL in operation in Great Britain, but there is documentary proof that they actually started working in 1480!
She has always found it fascinating that Bronze, a metal that she loves, is made out of Copper and Tin and it is these two soft metals that, when added to each other, make this incredibly strong one.
The place is absolutely fascinating, it made her have one or two pangs of rememberance, for she does love restoration workshops, they were shown everywhere and saw everything and it was all fascinating.
Including enormous metal frames that will house the wheels for two new large church bells that have been cast for the City of Rochester, New York State.
When the tour and question time were finished, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes welcomed the tour into the domestic quarters of the house above the offices.
YUM.. a large and very delicious cold buffet and drinks was awaiting them. She chatted to several nice people, all of different professions and ages and there was an amateur Bell Ringer who had always wanted to see this amazing place.
You can be a member of The English Speaking Union in many countries and the organise trips / tours like this everywhere.
Finding both Alan and Kathryn Hughes, she said "Thank you both so much for a lovely evening, I have enjoyed myself" and left whilst the party was still going strong! Into Aldgate East Station at 21.30 hours and out of Sloane Square Station at 22.25, followed by a very brisk walk back home up Sloane Street.
Home again home again jiggedyjig.. what a very nice evening. She sent the Jane the ESU member, who organised the jaunt, an email early this morning to say "Thank you". It was a very 'different' sort of thing to go and look at but it shows you that there are treasures of all sorts to be found everywhere, in huge cities and in small country villages, all you have to do is look for remember this..
SEEK & YE SHALL FIND!
Today was another extraordinary day, for it was the 50th anniversary of the Ceremonial State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. (Before his private family burial in Bladon churchyard, close to Blenheim Palace where Sir Winston Churchill was born). The entire original black and white television programme was reshown. She watched it with her Lebanese friends and lots of coffee and cookies were consummed.
It is now a very different world, the radio broadcasted speech given by President Eisenhower about Winston was moving, to say the least.. he spoke of Churchill the Statesman and Winston his colleague and friend.
Statesmen.. well, we certainly don't have anyone of the calibre of those two giants these days. Blair and the Bush'es and Kissinger - all Warmongers - of this day and age didn't and don't read History (yes, History with a Capital H) and who are all directly responsible for today's worlds problems.
It was a long day today, and tomorrow she has to go to Balham to give the Goaty person a smart frame, for you knew that one of her Cheeses won BEST in the World at the Nantwich Show, didn't you? Well, my mum said the award should be in a gilded frame, she brought it back here, gilded it and now it is ready to go back to Debbie.
Goodnight everyone.. have a happy week-end. She bought Yoghurt today, will get raw Goaty milk tomorrow.. slurp.. and so Rye Seeded Bread will be baked.. slurp indeed.
GeeGee Parrot.
