Well, do you? Yesterday it was her turn to help one of her most beloved friends, Susan, who taught how to make the traditional Danish Cookie.
They were talking quite early in the morning and Susan confessed to being 'frazzled' with the thought of seeing her accountant.
"No need for you to be frazzled darling" said my mama, "bake some cookies, get all your papers, receipts and things together and I will come and help you".
She took a box of large zipper storage bags from the store cupboard, went to Rymans to buy two accounting books and caught the bus to Streatham.
There was a vast, monstrous pile of paper awaiting her! Bank statements, bills and receipts to do with Susan's rental property, dividend notices, bills, receipts.. you name it, it was there.
She took half of the papers and explained to Susan what she wanted done with the other half. Aided by scrummy fresh coffee and LOTS of mini Danish cookies, they worked quickly and before long, there were neat piles of paper on the floor and on the table. Each pile was then put into the order of date.
First to be dealt with were the receipts, she separated them into two categories, personal and business, then she showed Susan the accounts book and explained the way to use the 'OUT' page for all the receipts pertaining to business.
Date, payee, subject, cash or bank. Simple.. Yippee.. receipts were entered, numbered and put into one of the twelve plastic bags, they had been marked for the twelve months.. January etc. Then they did the same with the 'IN' page. Next up were her personal finances, insurances, bank statements, dividend notes, pensions, personal expenditure bills and receipts.
With her doing the sorting and Susan writing in the books, the monstrous mountain of papers shrank to nothing, instead, there were containers of properly filed papers which corresponded exactly with two books. Susan smiled and said "bless you darling girl, I no longer have a knot in my tummy, my accountant will be thrilled and how easy it will be for me to do this now".
We are very excited because on Sunday she is going to bring Wicker Wheelie home! Debbie's David has reconditioned WW's chassis and he is ready to come back.. a classic example of one friend helping another.
So that's what friends are for, to mend all manner of things, to teach you how to keep books and how to bake cookies!
NO.. I did not write .. 'how to 'cook' the books'!
