There is a sad tale in the newspapers today. It is the story of a Frenchwoman who married her teenage sweetheart some forty seven years ago, had four children by him, three girls and a boy. He sexually abused the girls and frequently hit his son.
She was estranged from her parents and brothers and had no friends. His violence was 'an open secret' in the village where they lived.
After being hit once too often herself, she took a hunting rifle and shot him in the back, killing him. Her son had committed suicide the day before she killed her husband but his body was only discovered the day after she was taken into police custody.
What goes through a person's brain that tells them it is 'ok' to beat another person for decades and equally, what goes through the person's brain who is beaten for those decade and allows the spouse / perpetrator to beat them and sexually abuse their children? We don't know, we find it tragic beyond belief.
But her father Hugo had very rigid ideas on this subject.. it was "You don't beat children, women or animals"*. The man in France had obviously never thought about his own countrys' national motto which in English means..
Freedom ~ Equality ~ Fraternity.

Postscript: *This was Hugo talking to her brothers, he also hated women who were violent towards animals, children and husbands.
