Truly they are the finest of fine 'Jewels' and originate from Iran.
Do you know what I am talking about? They come with a hard skin and give juice and fruit, both of which are delicious, the juice is sold either as juice (which has usually been pasturised) or in the form of a molasses / syrup. And you can, if you're very lucky, find Turkish Delight made out of this juice.
This, Dear Readers, is a wondrous thing! We were incredibly fortunate to be given some about a year ago which came from a very famous shop in Istanbul and it was so good that we can still taste it! Yes, it was THAT GOOD!
*On a slightly different tack, the fruit contains an Alkaloid drug called Pelletierine. This alkaloid stuns worms so effectively that it seems a good idea to make a point of getting your children (whole family) to eat them, followed by dried apricots, apples or bananas for the purge.
If you hear the school has an outbreak of Tapeworms or if you see your animal has them this treatment would be a great precaution, if your pet has them, then your children (child) is more than likely to get them as well.*
On her jaunt to the market to purchase fruit and meat after being at Moorfields yesterday, she saw several boxes of them for sale, marked at 2 for a £1.00. They come in different varities and size but these were the biggest variety with the dark skins and they're usually £1.00 for one fruit, but they're now in season and coming into the street markets and Middle Eastern shops at a 'good' price
'One for me and one for GeeGee', she thought and plopped two into her basket. Why didn't I mention them in last nights' post? Because I didn't see them until this morning, I only saw the grapes which she washed and took to bed with us.. yes, she peels my grapes, this way she gets double the fibre, well, that's my excuse for being idle.
After a beakful of hummus, mixed seeds and my soft boiled egg, it was a surprise to see a fruit appear on a cutting plate (so not to lose the juice). LookieLookie. Oh. Red Jewels, hundreds of them!
How wonderful, such a treat. But do you know, Dear Readers, about what we write? We hope you do for they are marvellous and Beaky loves to 'sling' their juice everywhere.. they are.. of course.. usually known by their common-garden name which is Pomegranate.. but to us, they're Rubies beyond compare.
GeeGee Parrot.
