A CHOCOLATE FRUIT & NUT RING.. OH, BRING ON THE BELLS!

Bells.. Ring.. gettit? Ah well, it is Saturday and not every one has had such a scrummy fast breaking plate of yumyum the like of which I've just scoffed. She gave me these edible treasures to make up for all of her to'ing and fro'ing backward and forewards in the middle of last night.

These new new optical drugs obviously have the itchy same thing in them as well, for she was driven 'potty' last night, she tried everything that she possessed to try and stop them being so painful, the trusty old favourite aka Rescue Remedy Emergency Cream.. nah, it didn't even 'touch' them, jelly with essential oils of geranium and cyprus, that lasted for about five minutes, calamine cream with menthol crystals, about the same.

Eureka.. an ice pack! At midnight she was found rootling about in frosty cupboard and to her joy, she found a small plastic icepack, the like of which you would use in a sandwich box, she wrapped it in gauze and came back to bed, oooh, bliss. She swappped it between the most aggressively itchy areas. The worst being a pair of hives on the inside of her left elbow.. grrr and one large single one in her right armpit.

And at some point she fell asleep, to wake up to the telephone ringing. It was Wizard apologising for not contacting her sooner, what is wrong with one of the big Mobile systems? Quite a few people she knows are having problems, texts not being received, data missing or just no connection? She's very glad she retained her land line, that's for sure.

She's off to speak with a pharmacist at Ainsworth's, the Homeopathic Chemists in New Cavendish Street, London W1 and will take with her the two boxes of eye drops, for there has to be something homeopathic that will counteract these dreadfully scratchy hives.

And whilst she is out, she is collecting a packet, well, several packets of things as she wants to make something I have never seen, she says she hasn't made it for at least twenty years! It's a Chocolate Ring. It can be as fancy or as plain as you like but the basic ingrdients are..

Melted dark chocolate. Puffed Rice Cereal, she uses CocoPops, well, she did and hopes they're still made. First of all, measure how much of the cereal you need to fill the ring and then take some out, add a lot of chopped up dried fruits which you've marinated in something like White Rum. Apricots, cherries, raisins, sultanas, candied peel, barberries, chopped and whole nuts.

Strain the fruits and keep the liquid in a glass jar for the next time you need to marinate dried fruits.

Melt your dark chocolate, pour this over all the other ingredients in a large bowl, mix them together and pack them all into a ring.

If you are doing it for children, you omit the alcohot and soak the fruits in grape juice or black currant cordial.

When it has hardened, do this overnight so it has time to set properly, you gently dip the ring into warm water and put it down onto a flat surface and give it a sharp tap to get the ring out.

Decorate the ring with glacé fruits and chopped nuts by dipping them into melted chocolate and sticking them into / onto the ring.

The first time she had this was in Washington DC when a dear friend Bettina Luttrell gave a smart 'luncheon' for her in February 1973, the luncheon was held at her club, an small private members' club called The F Street Club. Note: The club is now closed.

She served it on many occasions and given it away many times, it is wonderful for Christmas and at Easter and says that it looks very pretty if you pack the middle with lots of different sized and highly coloured marzipan eggs (or you can cheat and get a bag of baby, foiled wrapped eggs!)

Now she's off and I'm going to doze on pole by front door, it's dry and not chilly, eureka!

GeeGee Parrot.

PostScript: Wizard is making me a Mouse Proof box! Those cheeky people have now learnt how to come in at night and raid my yumyum right from underneath Beaky! He is going to make a box into which my cage will fit, the edges will be covered in metal and the air holes will have two layers of wire mesh over them. The other advantage will be that it will be dark so her reading light won't keep me wake.
