She was tall, blonde and spoke good english with a mid european accent. Her dress was calf length, the skirt was of small red and white checks and around the bottom were rings of brightly coloured silk, the top was of organza, cut low and off the shoulder. Around her waist was a sash of the organza. She wore a heavy silver bracelet and silver hooped earings. She was aged thirty five and was radiant.
His skin and hair were as dark as night, he wore an eye patch over his left eye and had a dreadful scar running from that eye to his jaw. He wore dark calf length breeches and a skin tight top with very short sleeves, a sash attached his sword to waist, he looked extremely fierce, it was impossible to age him and he spoke not one word.
They were a striking looking couple and danced beautifully together.
The author, Sue Grafton, writes about parts of California that do not exist and in her book 'S for Silence' she wrote a note, it went more or less like this.. "I write these books and have created places and people that do not exist, so don't complain or email me because such and such is in the wrong place, they're not there and never have been, get over it".
And Daniel Silva in 'The Heist' wrote about things that don't exist.. as in the Austrian bank in Linz, he too wrote the disclaimer saying he had created such and such and changed things about.
It is called Poetic License and means the writer has taken the liberty of writing to suit their written piece.. Artistic License is what you do when you create..
The tall blonde and the fierce pirate were not what they seemed to be either, for the mid european Countess Yougosnapdear was Constance in a dress that she had made herself and the pirate was Hugo whose hair and skin were that colour because Constance regularly dyed his skin and hair with a solution of goodness knows what! He literally could and did disappear in the jungle.
She had also made his costume and shoes. His dreadful scar she had created with clear nail varnish. They were at a Fancy Dress party and Hugo won the prize because nobody recognised him!
You will never find the place where her title came from but if you are of a certain age and know very young children whom you are teaching card games, you may 'say' it, have you worked out what it is yet? Rattle your brain and think of, probably, the first card game you ever played?
Perhaps if I spelt it like this.. You go snap dear..
Constance gave the silver bracelet to her for her eighteenth birthday, it is one of her most treasured items. And she had probably been playing Snap with my mum that very afternoon on the beach at Port Dixon in that summer of 1953.
The photo is a black and white print, it sits on a shelf in our bedroom, the Countess and the Pirate.. who were not at all whom they appeared to be.
