She and old WW slithered down our steps and into the house as it started to bucket down with rain. It had stayed dry for most of the market's four hours of trading but oh boy, it was cold.. SO cold, in fact, that Debbie bought them TWO lots of Dumplings! With hot spicy dumpling sauce and LOTS of the chopped garlic and chilli sauce, it is the food to make your sinuses open and kills many an evil germ at two paces!
Heating is off.. so food has to be hot. They were given a big celeriac and she knew what she would do with hers. Chopchop, rinse under the tap and into cold water and allow to cool gently. Then strained over a mug, for celeriac vegetable water is tasty, a knob of butter, some salt and pepper and made into mash, then two big ladles of hot chicken stock et voila mes amis.. a delicious bowl of mashed celeriac and chicken potage (thick soup).
Plus a mug of spiced apple with an added slug of ginger and three cloves!
We ain't going anywhere.. for it is not pleasant out there, but thanks to her marketing on Friday, everything is to hand. Barley.. yum.. it has been a long time since she cooked something with this delicious stuff, that would be very tasty with the remains of the celeriac.
And she is pretty sure there is a tin of salmon in the store cupboard and she has a simple very quick recipe for a risotto with salmon. That would be a tasty supper, when she does it, I'll give you the recipe, it is with watercress, a favourite vegetable of ours. Well, that's two suppers sorted out for this week and we have a BIG pot of chicken stock, a lot of which she will freeze in ice cubes and some of which we will have with vegetables.
I am up on a perch with a full tummy and she is bundled up on the bed reading a book about Burt Bacharach. She had completely forgotten that he worked with Marlene Dietrich for so long.
If you have to drive in heavy snow or bad conditions, make sure you have survival stuff with you. Constance used to sling a big sack of potatoes in the back of her little van, it kept the rear wheels weighted, plus a rug, a thermos, boots with snow grips, gloves, a hat, a BRIGHT coat.
These days there are mobile phone, make sure your's is charged, drive at a sensible speed. We have severe flooding alerts all around the country, there are extremely high Spring tides and high winds are creating 50+ foot waves, don't be foolish and cause the Lifeboats to have to come out to rescue you. Stay away from water and don't drive in to a flooded area as your engine can be flooded and stall and then you are in trouble.
So now I'm going to have a doze.. and I'll be back again tomorrow.
