NATALIA SANMARTIN FENOLLERA IS A JOURNALIST & WRITES AS THE COMMENT EDITOR FOR THE SPANISH PAPER 'CINCO DIAS'.. WE READ HER FIRST BOOK LAST NIGHT.

The book is called 'The Awakening of Miss Prim' and she laughed from the first page! The book she had just finished was a novel set on the Texas Mexican border, dreadfully true to life about those conditions, the drug cartels and their tragic hold on people's lives. It's called 'The Govenor's Wife' and was written by Mark Gimenez, she didn't laughed at anything in that book.

So this slim book by Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera was a delight and it expanded her new year resolution.

The first bit is to read unknown (to her) authors and after reading this novel, she is expanding it to 'The Classics', none of which she read at school.

Now she never took Greek and only one term of Latin, so she isn't able to read them in their original languages but they are available in English and she plans to read at least one of them a fortnigh

Psssst.. does she have any idea of what she taking on?

Moving swiftly along.. this book is enchanting, it makes you imagine amongst other things, a village, a particular house with several rooms, children's faces, voices and other characters in their houses, too numerous to mention.

She wrote it in 2014 and with any luck she might have written a couple more by now. She dedicated her book to her parents. "To my parents, Miguel and Cuca, with love, gratitude and admiration".

And now for something completely different..

Granny's recipe for Oatcakes uses Oatmeal, salt, lard, bicarbonate of soda and hot water and as she has NO intention of having those wretched hives again if she can help it, she trundled off down to the North End Road to give the boxes of Nairn's Oatcakes (with potato starch) to the shop.

And the co-op was open so she went in to collect the necessary ingredients to make them herself.

Lard, they had plenty of that, the same with bicarbonate of soda.. by the way, did you know that they put powdered wheat starch into Baking Powder? No, neither did she until this afternoon.

Then she went looking for the Oatmeal.. huh, none to be had.. and they were out of stock of proper oats so went to look at what Oatcakes they stocked and found.. oh lookielookie!

'All Butter - Ginger & Dark Chocolate Cookies'. Made by the Co-op, gluten free with no horrid additives like wheat or potato starch. You can just imagine how quickly they flew off the shelf into WW!

It was a glorious afternoon, the sky was bright blue and the sun was low in the sky as it was past two o'clock but she had on multiple layers of clothing to keep her warm and so she 'hoofed' it from the North End Road up to the big Tesco store on Warwick Road.

Surely they will have Pinhead Oatmeal here, she thought to herself, she searched the baking aisle, she even combed through the 'Free From' section but there were none to be had, so she will go to Asda at Clapham Junction tomorrow, they stock Hamlyn's Pinhead Oatmeal which is what she wants.

For she is determined to make herself proper oatcakes, they're equally delicious with savoury things or sweet things, just as she is determined not to have those wretched itchy hives back again.

And having hoofed it from the North End Road to the Warwick Road, she thought.. 'It's bang on 5 o'clock, I wonder how quickly I can walk home' and set off along the Cromwell Road at a fast pace with WW bouncing along beside her.

And stopped outside our house bang on 17.32! Now that ain't 'shabby' for an old dame like her, is it?

We're going to bed early as she has to go to the Audiology clinic tomorrow and they're only open until 11.15am.

Chirpful is what we are.. we are both full of chirp.

GeeGee Parrot.
