HER 'DURHAM' QUILT.

"Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh, what a beautiful day".. who sang that? I bet there are a lot of you Dear Readers, who will say the name of the film from which it came plus the name of the person who sang it but you are a lazy lot and I can only think of two, maybe three, people who might bother to write in the comments box at the end of this post and tell me!

I know why. You are all far too busy reading that post on the Savoyard Potato Cake.. the views on this tasty Tale have rocketed past 350 and are heading fast for 400! It makes her mouth water just to read the recipe!

Who would have thought it! But it is indeed a very tasty dish, I hope you are making it and when you do make an an couple extra for they are delicious cold.

I told you that she had changed over to a summer weight duvet, this bed covering 'lark' is not quite as simple as it sounds.

She likes, in the chilly winter months, to have a heavy-weight cover on her bed. We don't have the radiator on in the bedroom, yes, it can be a bit chilly-billy sometimes but she says she prefers it to a hot bedroom.

Back to the covers. On top of the duvet lies a quilt. It is reversible, one side is Egg Yolk Yellow and the reverse is Primrose Yellow.

It is an old North Country quilt, dating from about 1915. The quilting is incredibly intricate and one day, she promises herself, she will take a photo of the quilt and send it to an expert to have it actually 'aged'.

For as any good Quilter will tell you, the pattern styles on the older quilts will date an item.

The Durham, or North Country Quilts as they are known as by Quilters, are made out of one fabric or strips of the fabric if the quilt is wide. They are not made out of patchwork. It is Quilt Dealers who tend to use the name Durham Quilts.

She bought it a very long time ago at an Antique Fair at the NEC (National Exhibition Centre) Birmingham. She was working at the fair for a friend of hers, Marina Orpen of Valmar Antiques.

She had gone for a walk-about to stretch her legs
and to get them both a cup of coffee. Turning into an aisle.. wow.. there it was ! Pegged up on display upon the back wall of another stand!

Friends of hers know of her love of yellow, how could she 'possibly' leave such a glorious thing hanging there like that?

She couldn't, so she hot-footed it back to Valmar Antiques stand to get her cheque book, yes, it was that long ago! The dealer smiled and told her what it was, she also told her the date but that went out of her brain almost immediately.

It was packed up, the cheque was handed over and she rushed back to show Marina, who agreed that something as beautiful as this had to be bought.

They can be confused with Welsh Quilts upon first glance but there is a difference and that is in the wadding. Durham quilts have cotton wadding whilst the Welsh have wool.

She is incredibly careful with this beautiful quilt and as I like to loll around and we play Parrot amusing games such as Catch the Grape and Chase the Almond, the quilt is always covered in a full sized sheet, always! For woe betide me if anything like a 'mishap' happened on this quilt!

But summer is approaching so this lovely quilt has been washed, very gently, in pure soap and is hanging over the sitting room door so that she will dry and not get creased. She will then be packed away in a moth-proof bag until late Autumn.

And Little Miss Vegas gets to strut her stuff!

Who is Little Miss Vegas. Well, she is another quilt in our life, how she came into her life is for a different Tale. We will tell 'The Tale of Las Vegas February 1973' another time. It will feature: Elvis, Diana Ross, Dean Martin and a hotel up-grade!

But now, it is time to stop 'lolling' about, to get on with our day and do stuff and things for someone.

Who did sing that song? Please do tell!

GeeGee Parrot.
