FEBRUARY'S GIFTS..

It is February 1st and I have two Tales for YOU!

Let us start at the beginning.. always a good place.

WE have three Orange trees that live outside on the bathroom window ledge, they grow tiny fruit which SHE puts into alcohol for cooking.

For Christmas this year, SHE decorated them with about a hundred shiny bright red ornaments.. little drums, squares and balls of different sizes.

They looked pretty and it made the dustmen laugh!

Today, SHE thought it was time to pack them away. As SHE did so, SHE saw that all three of the little trees are growing their own, very special decorations.

They are hard to see at this stage as they are the same colour as the glossy leaves but in another month.. there will be lots and lots of real Oranges masquerading as Orange Ball decorations!

Tale number two happened after SHE took down the red decorations.

The amount of rain that has fallen has caused OUR steps to go green! And a bit slimy.. slippery, is not a good state for steps to be.

So a quick dive under the bed produced the pressure washer! Very fierce machine which blasts away all dirt and slimy green stuff!

SHE attached the hose to the mains, plugged him into an electrical socket and vroom, off they went!

Only to be divebombed by a cheeky Feral Dove, YOU know them as London Pigeons.

This norty Dove was not frightened off by the water OR the vroomvroom noise at all.. he sat on the door step, he flew to the top of the rubbish area door and it was whilst he was perched up there, that SHE saw one of his feet was all scrunched up with cotton and hard chewing gum..

GRRRRRR... UGH. Poor, poor bird.

SHE switched the power off and went in to get a cloth to wipe the door.. he went in too! I might say that I was playing in the bathroom so did not see this interloper entering MY house.

SHE spoke to this Dove and said "I can only do something about your foot IF you let me pick you up".. SHE bent down, he stayed still and with him in both hands, SHE went into the kitchen.

Long, long story cut short.. it took HER two hours of soaking the chewing gum with nail polish remover, then using an orange stick, cuticle scissors and a pin to remove the dreadful mass of filthy gum from his foot. SHE cleaned his foot with surgical spirit to disinfect it.

He has lost two toes, his inside front toe has gone, all that remains is a mis-shapen lump, his back toe was stuck under the ball of his foot by the hardened gum and may never go back into place but it is free. However, he has recently broken the middle one.

SHE gave him a bath, dried him and treated him in the kitchen sink to a powder bath of Mite Powder.

He is now resting quietly in the sitting room in MY smallest travel cage. He is eating proper bird food and drinking water with avian vitamins in it.

He will stay for several days to give his poor little foot a chance to heal properly.

SHE has just been in to check on him, he is in the daylight sitting on a glass topped table. The room is quiet and warm, as SHE approached the table SHE saw his head move to watch HER, then HER eyes filled with tears.

When Doves see someone they love, usually another Dove, they make a sound which comes from deep within their chest.. from their hearts.. humans call it coo'ing.

SHE has not heard this sound directed towards HER since 2003, the sound of a Feral Dove saying oooo-oooo-oooo.

It is almost 24 years to the day that Peter Pigeon came into HER life.. this little Dove will fly free but for a while.. he is OUR guest.

Now YOU are wondering why I said there were two gifts.. well..

A Feral (wild) Dove trusted HER.. such a gift.

GeeGee Parrot.
February 1st, 2014.
