Yippee folks.. it's raining! Yes.. good 'honest' rain, which is just what we need. Don't grumble, it's not Monday so your washing won't get wet but the ground will and as everything planted or growing now needs moisture, as well as sunshine, everything should / will be well!
Especially our FIGS! For besides Cypriot fig, for she has a Violetta, born in the Bavarian Alps and used to extremely low temperatures and two Brown Turkeys. But the Turkeys are still little babies, we won't be eating their fruits this year.
She has four very long poles and is going to dig four big holes, pour in quick drying cement, put the poles in and erect a cage of fine horticultural mesh around Cypriot fig, the Violetta is small enough to put a light net over her, this stops naughty birds having figs for tasty teas!
Her lunch is chilling in a box, cold steak cut into strips, it marinated over night in a garlic, ginger and soy mix, she'll add fresh herbs and lettuce. Water bottle is chilling in the fridge, she'll eat her lunch in the small park at about 12.30am, then be ready for her 1.30pm appointment with Valerie.
Yesterday it rained.. all day! Oh, she was SO happy! Especially as she had just dug over a couple of beds and found the soil to be very dry and her garlic beds are much too dry, this means the garlic are not expanding as much as they should do.
But she had a most successful day! For she found, finally, the BIG Hozelock attachment for an oval tap, they take up to a 24mm diameter and have a wind-up key which tightens the attachment around the tap spout, their code is 2177, they're reclusive beasts, she found it in Homebase in Battersea.
Then went onto the big Tesco on the Cromwell Road. It wasn't yet mark down time but the smiley fishmonger greeeted her and said "How are you, how is the allotment, you must be happy with this rain? Oh go quickly to the discount place, Tom's there", she went and found Tom, his assistant, putting things out onto the shelves.
Yubba-Dubba! A huge whole side of wild salmon for £10.50! And other such goodies, all perfect to pop into frosty white larder.. aka freezer and also two chunks of Wensleydale, a cheese she loves, and a chunk of parmesan. These goodies and two kilo tubs of Fat Free Lancashire Yoghurt, which is truly absolutely delicious, together with a cucumber, completed her shop.
She came home and thankful that it was working, she switched the heating on to low, made a mug of amber nectar, got out a cutting board, sharpened a knife and cut the salmon side into pieces, bagged it, wrote on the label and put it away. "Yummy fish GeeGee, really yummy fish, how kind he was to tell me".
But all this excitement happened yesterday. Today is the first day of Summer, yes, folks, it's now June and nearly 10.00am, so we have to flap and shake our wings and legs and get our show on the road.
Stay happy and healthy out there folks, play nice and BE kind. And remember.. always walk on the sunny side of the street.. in real life AND in your mind.
GeeGee Parrot.
June 1st, 2016.
PostScript: It was so cold and wet and as she had multiple layers of clothing on when she went out, I understood when she said she couldn't strip off to a vest and leggings and weigh herself on the electronic scales in Boots yesterday.. for surely the men in white coats would have taken her away and then.. who would've cooked my supper?
