Blimey! She came down the steps as if old Nick himself was behind her instead of Wicker Wheelie!
For weatherwise it is truly a dreadful day out there, exactly how it was eleven years ago, if you haven't read my previous post, you should know that today, November 18th, is our anniversary, we have now been together for eleven years.
Last night she watched Professional Masterchef. The skill test set by Marcus Waring was Buck Rarebit, she had forgotten about this delicious dish and her mouth watered instantly for she knew it well as Hugo had loved this dish and made it beautifully.
Watching Marcus making it last night was just like watching her father cooking all those years ago in the family kitchen.. butter, flour, milk, egg yolk, cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce, hot mustard, home made bread drizzled with oil and rubbed with crushed garlic, bread toasted, sauce spread thickly onto toast and grilled, a soft fried egg put on top.. and eaten with many slurpy slurps!
She bought a small sour dough loaf this afternoon on her way home from the paint shop and when she'd shed her wet clothes and put them to dry on the towel rail, she set to making us a Buck Rarebit. It was tasty, very tasty, we like tasty food in this house and it made me think, I wonder how many other tasty dishes has she forgotten?
What other delicious tastes are lying uncreated and untasted by old Beaky in our kitchen? For now we tend to eat quite plain food, freekeh instead of potatoes or rice, an enormous amount of steamed vegetables, griddled or steamed fish, she eats much more fish than red meat.
And it has been nearly five months since she ate or has cooked with any butter! So she made the Buck Rarebit carefully with love and great attention to the various tastes and we both ate it slowly, with relish.
You don't necessarily have or need to 'splash the cash' on a special day or anniversary, what you do need to do is to spend a happy time with your loved one and perhaps cook something delicious and for us today, that Buck Rarebit was just that.. a tasty, delicious version of cheese on toast.
It's been a Happy Anniversary.
